Media Center

The primary mission of the Library/Media Center at The Weber School is to support and supplement the total educational program which is dedicated to preparing our students to be knowledgeable, thinking, responsible Jewish adults.

Within this framework, the Library/Media Center provides a wide range of resources that meet our informational and educational needs, enrich and expand the curriculum, and promote the joy of reading. The Library/Media Center creates an atmosphere that encourages students and faculty to explore more fully the classroom subjects that interest them, expand their imaginations, and delve into areas of personal interest. The Library/Media Center staff are active participants and partners in the teaching/learning process and offer creative instruction in library and information technologies across the curriculum.

THE COLLECTION:

Presently our collection consists of over 5,000 titles, with room to grow in our new media center. We subscribe to more than 25 periodicals (including periodicals from each of the movements within Judaism) and receive The New York Times, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Wall Street Journal, and USA Today daily. We have over 200 videos (VHS and DVD formats) and CDs. We also provide a collection of other media, including online databases and CD-ROMS.

We have developed an extensive Holocaust Collection due to the very generous donations of the Lefco family in honor of their parents, Harry and Genia Lefco. We have also been very fortunate to receive grants from The Avi Chai Foundation since our inception to help us build our collection, especially our Judaics materials. Our collection, which includes both Hebrew and English texts and videos, features an excellent variety of resources scholarly texts.

We use the Dewey Decimal cataloging system to organize our secular collection and the Weine Classification Scheme for Judaic Libraries for our Judaics materials. The Weine system expands Dewey for Judaics while blending in with it organizationally. All Judaics books have a "z" at the beginning of their catalog number to identify them and many have a Jewish Star of David sticker on their spine as well.

Our catalog and circulation systems are fully automated using the Softlink Alice system. Every computer on campus has an icon linking into the catalog to help students and faculty search for materials by title, author, keywords, subject, or barcode.

THE BEE and JOSEPH WILD HEBREW LITERATURE COLLECTION:

The Weber School's Hebrew Literature collection has been named in loving memory of Bee and Joseph Wild (z"l), in recognition of their lifelong commitment to Judaism, Israel and the intrinsic value of education.

From 1947-1981, theirs were the everyday struggles and achievements of many Jewish Atlantans who sought to live modest, modern Jewish lives.

These brief biographies have been prepared by their children in order to perpetuate their parents' memory.

CIRCULATION:

Our circulation policies are fairly flexible to meet the needs of our users. Reference books may not be checked out of the library. All other books may be checked out for a 2-week period. Videos and CDs may only be checked out by faculty. Overdue notices are sent and inventory is taken in order to provide accountability.

In addition to students, faculty, and school staff, circulation privileges are available to parents.

LIBRARY PROGRAMS:

The Library/Media Center program supports student and faculty needs. The Library is always open for individual study and research. Class visits are scheduled to provide general orientations, introductions to research, and work periods. The staff helps students and faculty locate and use materials and equipment upon request, including the online databases and internet resources. The staff can facilitate interlibrary loans when necessary.

Collection development in the library is closely tied to the curriculum needs of the school. The librarian consults with the faculty and selects materials based on their plans after determination of overall relevance, quality, cost, and favorable reviews from professional sources. The librarian also purchases materials requested by students and parents that are deemed appropriate. The librarian pays special attention to identifying and purchasing materials to support the personal growth of all members of our community. The librarian is responsible for the overall building and maintenance of the collection.
