During a poignant 9/11 commemoration program led by Weber's Student Council, students heard from special guest Julie Mokotoff.
Mrs. Mokotoff spoke from the heart about losing her close friend Dave Retik during the tragic events of 9/11 and her thoughts on remembrance through giving. She also discussed the organization Beyond the 11th, which was created by Susan Retik, Dave's widow, and Patti Quiqley. Beyond the 11th empowers widows in Afghanistan who have been afflicted by war, terrorism, and oppression and provides funding to programs that enable widows to learn a skill so that they are better able to support themselves and their families. Students were so inspired by Mrs. Mokotoff's story, that many of them stayed after the program to thank her for visiting Weber and being so open about her personal loss.
September 11th is a National Day of Service and Remembrance and students across the country are called to volunteer in tribute to first responders and individuals lost and injured in the attacks. For the next two weeks, Student Council is sponsoring a letter-writing drive to first responders in our community.
