Grammy Award Winning Musician Howard Levy Visits Weber

Weber’s Performing Arts Program launched its Visiting Artist Series this past September, bringing renowned local and national artists to the Weber community to share their expertise during masterclasses and events. Among the impressive roster of past performers and artists are Charlie Kramer and Shoshana Gugenheim Kedem, who had a profound effect on students and the wider community.
 
Last week, the series continued as Weber’s Music Program Director Drew Cohen and Jewish cultural art series Nerenenah welcomed Howard Levy to the school. Mr. Levy, a two-time Grammy Award Winning master musician who has earned widespread recognition and acclaim for his expert harmonica and piano playing, met with students across Weber’s music program.
 
During his time with students, Mr. Levy shared how, at just 19 years old, he discovered how to play the diatonic harmonica as a fully chromatic instrument by developing never-before-heard techniques. He demonstrated his unique approach to music and musical techniques for students, leaving the crowd impressed by his process— especially how he played multiple instruments simultaneously! Weber sophomore Levi Gordon couldn't believe how expressive the harmonica was in Mr. Levy’s hands, saying, "It's insane how much sound he gets from what’s essentially 'a piece of metal.’ Not every day can you hear about a musical technique from the musician who invented it!”
 
Several students had the opportunity to accompany Howard Levy on their instruments, allowing them to showcase their musical skills and creativity and giving them a chance to receive feedback and guidance from a true master. Mr. Cohen was thrilled to help bring Howard Levy to the school, saying, “The opportunity for our students to learn directly from a musician of Howard Levy's caliber and creativity is truly priceless. It's a chance for them to expand their musical horizons and be inspired by someone who has pushed the boundaries of what's possible on their instrument.”
 
The Visiting Artist Series is just the beginning of a new era for music and the performing arts at Weber. The program was launched in anticipation of construction on Weber’s new Music and Performing Arts Center, which has officially begun! This new facility will feature a state-of-the-art theater, rehearsal space, recording studio, dance studio, music studio, and a builder's workshop for stage design and production. The center promises to bring a new level of intimacy to productions and will serve as a valuable resource for students and the Atlanta Jewish community, hosting large classes, symposiums, and programs.
 
Next in Weber’s Visiting Artist Series is Jacob “Spike” Kraus, who joins Weber Wednesday, March 15th. Mr. Kraus is a singer/songwriter and educator whose music has been included in the cantorial curriculum of H.U.C.-J.I.R., and is featured by Jewish Rock Radio and PJ Library. During his visit, Mr. Kraus will perform with Weber musicians during a special all-school Kehillah.
