Hoop There It Is!
This year, Weber athletics jump-started the basketball season with its version of college basketball’s Midnight Madness—MIDWEEK MADNESS—at the MJCCA. Organized by Weber Assistant Athletic Director Tasha Humphrey with help from Weber basketball parents Jason Kurtz and Alan Kitey, the event was a fun evening for the entire community.
“We have great players, size, and skill, and this was the perfect opportunity to showcase our basketball program to the larger community and show off our team while building hype around the upcoming season with our Weber teams and families,” shared Coach Humphrey. Like Midnight Madness, the athletes competed in skills competitions, a dunk contest, and various scrimmages. The evening closed with a spirited game of Weber dads vs. JCC dads, with Weber’s very own Head of School Rabbi Harwitz donning a jersey for Weber.
Weber partnered with the MJCCA for the event, offering a terrific venue and the opportunity for their youth basketball teams to participate. “The Marcus JCC of Atlanta was proud to host the first annual MJCCA & The Weber School Midweek Madness Athletic Event showcasing our amazing athletes,” said Jared Powers, MJCCA CEO. “The MJCCA is about community and connection at its core, so bringing together MJCCA and The Weber School coaches, athletes, and parents to kick off their seasons made for a memorable and spirit-filled night. The excitement was palpable as each athlete was introduced to the crowd and the laughter was contagious as parents took to the basketball court to compete against each other. Watching The Weber School’s athletes interact with our younger MJCCA athletes was particularly moving. We know this is just the start of many more events bringing us together as a community.”
Weber parent Brian Mand emceed the evening with fun and humorous commentary. “Midnight Madness represented so many things that are great about Weber: community, spirit, excellence, and fun. It was an incredible way to kick off the Weber basketball seasons and showcase our talented student-athletes. From the slam-dunk contest to the Dad's game, from the performances of the cheerleaders to the appearance of Rabbi Harwitz in a game, it was certainly a memorable event, and one that I hope continues for years to come." Mand shared.
Weber looks forward to partnering with the MJCCA for more fan-friendly spirited events in the future!
