Honors Physics Students Launch Successful Catapult Construction Project
Honors Physics students in Danny Bayless's and Adna Muliawan's classes made mini plywood catapults by application of physics principles from kinematics and dynamics. Working closely with the Daniel Zalik Academy, students worked in pairs to design, prototype, and laser-cut flat-packed catapults. Students carefully optimized the launch angle, toleranced pieces for assembly, and made personal touches to each design. With only six rubber bands and two thin sheets of plywood, the winning teams launched their projectile over 20 feet! Mr. Bayless loved the students' enthusiasm for the project, saying, "This project allowed students to explore physics concepts and mathematical principles studied in class, such as Newton's First Law of Motion, vector resolution, and two-dimensional projectile motion in real-world applications, furthering their interest in and understanding of the physical world in which they live."
