College Counseling

Freshman year is a time to explore, hone study skills, and adjust to the rigor of high school level work. While the college process should not play a large role in the freshman year, there are things that are important:

• Take the most rigorous course load that is appropriate for you.
• Explore a broad base of experiences outside of the classroom.
• Begin to build relationships with teachers who will ultimately write your college recommendation.
• Read widely. The more you read, the best you will ultimately do on standardized testing. It may also eventually help you in the essay writing process.

The College Office offers a parent meeting for all freshman parents and hosts seminars for freshmen, including an introduction to the college process, a resume building workshop, and an introduction to SCOIR, the software program used by the College Office. 

• Continue to take the most rigorous course load that is appropriate for you. 
• Continue to explore options out of the classroom. Start to look at leadership opportunities. 
• Take the optional Pre-ACT offered by the College Counseling Office (no preparation is suggested or required).
• Every Weber sophomore will take the PSAT in October (no preparation is suggested or required).
• If travel permits, start to visit colleges. At this point, you should be thinking about types of colleges rather than specific names of colleges. 
• Attend the Atlanta Area Case Studies program in February.
• Continue to read widely and build rapport with teachers. 
• Meet individually with a college counselor to create an academic and testing plan for the next two years.

  The College Office offers a parent meeting for all sophomore parents and hosts seminars for sophomores, including continued resume building and how to research colleges.

Fall 

• Attend the College Fair in late August. 
• Attend college admissions representative visits at Weber.
• Take the optional Pre-ACT offered by the College Counseling Office.
• Every Weber junior will take the PSAT in October.
• Register for the SAT and/or ACT according to the testing plan created in sophomore year.
• If travel permits, visit colleges when possible.

Winter

• Attend College Counseling testing feedback session to review Pre-ACT and PSAT results.
• Attend the College Night for parents and students to kick off the official start of your individualized college process.
• Meet individually with your college counselor to create a college list and review your academic and testing plan.
• Both parents and students will fill out a questionnaire for our office during this time.

Spring

• Visit colleges over Passover break if possible. Your college counselor will help you create a list of appropriate colleges to visit. 
• Meet as a family with your college counselor. 
• Continue to meet with your college counselor as necessary.
• Work with the college counselors and the English department to write a personal narrative that may serve as your college essay.

Summer

• Work on your college essay. The college counselors are available by appointment to assist you.
• Continue to visit colleges when possible.
• Attend optional essay writing workshops conducted by the college counselors
• Complete your resume.

The College Office spends the majority of the fall working with seniors. In November, the focus changes to juniors. The College Office will host a fall meeting for junior parents along with the November College Kick-Off meeting. Additionally, student seminars are held, which include finalizing the resume and an orientation to SCOIR, a software program used by the College Office.

Fall Semester

• Participate in the College Office Application Workshop on the first day of school.
• Attend the College Fair in late August.
• Attend college admissions representative visits to Weber.
• Seniors are encouraged to visit colleges when possible. 
• If advised, take a fall ACT and/or SAT.
• Work with your college counselor to decide when and if your test scores should be submitted 
• Attend Senior College Night for both parents and students
• Register for FAFSA PIN www.fafsa.gov and CSS Profile www.collegeboard.com (if seeking financial aid)
• File FAFSA & CSS PROFILE as required for financial aid consideration
• Finalize your college list with your College Counselor.
• Most Early Action (EA) and Early Decision (ED) deadlines are November 1 (UGA and Ga Tech both have an October 15th deadline).
• Begin researching scholarship opportunities 

Spring Semester 

• Submit Regular Decision application by the January deadline
• Ensure all necessary test scores have been sent to colleges
• Most college decisions will be finalized by April 1st
• Students must choose one college and submit a deposit to that college by May 1
• Work with your college counselor if necessary to understand your financial aid package if applicable

Starting in the summer and continuing into the fall semester, the college counselors will help each student on their individualized path and timeline to submit applications to each college. Every senior is required to attend a workshop on the first day of school where they complete the Common Application, learn how to request transcripts and how to engage with colleges including interview preparation. Parents and students are invited to a Senior College Night early in the fall to discuss the upcoming process. Throughout the fall, students meet often with their college counselor for essay review, application review and application submission.
