Sports Science Research
Students in Maggie Sherlock’s Sports Medicine class, part of The Stan Kasten Academy of Sports Science and Management, visited the Emory Sport Performance and Research Center (SPARC) at the Atlanta Falcons training facility. SPARC is a cutting-edge biomechanics lab and the nation’s leading research center for injury prevention in youth athletes.
During the visit, students toured the facility and observed demonstrations of advanced research tools, including motion capture cameras, force plates, and specialized MRI equipment. They also engaged with SPARC’s virtual reality technology, which tested their reaction time, eye tracking, balance, and cognitive processing.
SPARC researchers are currently using this VR software to collect objective data that helps track recovery progress after concussions. This trip gave students a behind-the-scenes look at the expansive, cross-disciplinary world of sports science research and offered a unique opportunity to see classroom concepts applied in a real-world setting.
The Stan Kasten Academy of Sports Science and Management is Weber’s signature program for students interested in careers in sports science, medicine, fitness, management, and business. Through specialized coursework, research, internships, and professional mentorship, the Kasten Academy mirrors college-level programs and equips students with practical skills, leadership experience, and a clear pathway to success.
