Weber's Young Women In STEM organization is led by The Daniel Zalik Academy Lab Manager Madi Anderson. Along with five additional Weber coaches, Mrs. Anderson is leading a growing group of 9th-12th grade young women as they explore their interests and opportunities in STEM fields.

This Weber group's primary goal is to attract young women to STEM fields by introducing them to important causes that are being addressed, provide mentoring by women in professional leadership in STEM fields, and introduce them to the variety of professional STEM pathways. As it has been historically less common for women to enter STEM fields, Ms. Anderson and the coaches are committed to building their students' confidence by cultivating their leadership skills in STEM, enabling them to progress seamlessly into advanced study and practice of STEM during college and in their careers. and prepare themselves to

The focus of this year's Weber Young Women in STEM program is the Biomimicry Youth Design Challenge, in association with the Biomimicry Institute. This national competition among middle and high school students will take place virtually in April. "Public presentations and competitions provide the best setting to engage students," Ms. Anderson shared. "With an ultimate goal in mind, the students will commit and dive into the work."

The prize for winning the challenge is $500, with the funds to be donated to the students' charity of choice. The topic for this year's competition is Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation In Your Local Community. Along with other teams, Weber's Young Women in STEM team will aim to solve a problem in the community caused by climate change.
