9/11 and Meaningful Student-led Action

Starting this coming Thursday, September 11, The Weber School will again honor the lives lost and the sacrifices made 24 years ago this week by actively appreciating the courage and dedication of our local first responders through meaningful student-led action.

To begin the day of remembrance, the Weber community will gather for a special morning announcement and reflection. Students will read selections from Psalm 90 and observe a moment of silence as they recount the timeline of events on September 11, 2001. The ceremony will conclude with the sounding of the shofar, a call to remembrance, reflection, and renewal that honors the lives lost and inspires a shared commitment to build a more unified and compassionate world.

Following the reflection, the student-directed and managed Michael and Andrea Leven Office of Student Service and Philanthropy will launch a schoolwide “9/11 Service Campaign” to provide multiple opportunities for members of our Weber community to appreciate regional police, fire, and emergency medical personnel in concrete ways and for their dedication and devotion to our protection and welfare. Through this appreciation, we will express respect, reverence, and gratitude for those who risked their lives and, in so many cases, made the ultimate sacrifice on that tragic day in 2001.

Spearheaded by the Director of The Leven Office for the 2025–2026 school year, Adrianna C. (Class of 2026), the initiative will offer students concrete ways to offer gratitude and engage in service, starting on September 11 and continuing through Erev Rosh Hashanah on Monday, September 22. To amplify their impact, an anonymous donor has offered to provide funding for the following acts of appreciation and service:
  • Between September 11 and 22, the Leven Office will invite Weber students to drop by a card-making station in the Student Commons and write notes of thanks to Sandy Springs police officers, firefighters, and emergency personnel. In addition to sharing their personal sentiments, each handwritten card will earn $1 towards a fund that will purchase gifts for our first responders.
  • For students who engage in volunteer service from September 11–22, every verified hour of service recorded through Weber’s MobileServe database will earn $3 towards the fund that will support the purchase of gifts for first responders. In this way, students may leverage their service leading up to Rosh HaShanah to increase the funds raised through Weber’s “9/11 Service Campaign” that will purchase gifts of appreciation for our first responders.
Immediately after the end of our school day on September 22, the student leadership of the Leven Office will personally deliver the letters and gifts to local departments, underscoring that the best way to honor the memory of those we lost is through action.
