The Daniel Zalik Academy of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Design (DZA):

In just year two, the DZA is exceeding expectations with an accelerated program of human centered design efforts.

DZA teacher Adna Muliawan's Science Research and Entrepreneurship class kicked off a year-long project with formal presentations last week. This program's overarching goal is to help the world around us -- to bring Tikkun Olam to life and fulfill the mission of both The Weber School and The DZA. The class charged students with exploring various problem areas in a community and coming up with solutions to prototype and test with their target audience to provide a realistic and workable solution.

Each student gave a 5-7 minute presentation and received up to three minutes of constructive feedback from classmates, DZA faculty, Head of School Rabbi Harwitz, and Principal Shlaina Van Dyke.

During this first phase of the project, students identified and researched issues that they identified, clarified the challenge to be solved, and shared the rationale behind trying to solve this particular problem.
Here are brief overviews of each student's project:
Jolie Abadi: Educate youth in poor, rural areas of South Africa about exploring careers in Tracking, rather than illegal poaching that many youngsters in that region turn to for money.

Sam Feldstein: Tackle the all too common problem of procrastination by creating an online program that helps students organize assignments, projects, and tests, taking into consideration key factors that can trigger procrastination such as poor time management and lack of emotional regulation around things such as anxiety, stress, boredom, and feeling overwhelmed.

Talia Neufeld: Create a stress-relieving tool or activity that will help smokers quit smoking and manage through the physical and emotional withdrawal symptoms of nicotine addiction that often lead to relapse.
Micah Reich: Help people engage with technology and understand technical research by making usage instructions more accessible through illustrations and graphic content to present information and findings so that more people can understand.

Rebecca Lewin: Lower caregiver stress and, therefore, improve cancer patients' survival rate by developing a medical pill organizing system that will allow patients to manage or help manage their medicine. Additionally, find a way for low-income families with two working parents help handle a sick child's medicinal needs.

Matthew Aronin: Simplify unnecessary complexity for math students by eliminating the need to learn how to use a calculator with extraneous functionality by creating a more user-friendly, approachable calculator with only relevant functions.

Stay tuned for these incredible student projects' progression as the DZA continues to grow, evolve, and improve our world.
