Sous Vide Solutions!

After completing studies on differential equations, dynamic systems, and control theory, seniors in Chris Chapman’s multivariable calculus class tackled repurposing simple crockpots into Sous Vide cookers. After gathering the necessary components, such as the heating element, temperature sensor, water pump, and microcontroller, students set out to create a culinary solution that delivers consistently delicious results.
 
The students assembled the machine by soldering the components onto a custom printed circuit board, working with tools and technology provided by the Daniel Zalik Academy lab. Once the hardware was in place, the class directed their attention to programming the microcontroller to monitor the temperature sensor and control the heating element based on the temperature setpoint. By carefully tuning the system using dynamic systems and differential equations, they achieved cooking “perfection” through precise temperature control.
 
Senior Barri Seitz expressed her appreciation for the resources the Daniel Zalik Academy provided, saying, “Having access to the DZA Lab and its equipment makes a project like this doable. Being hands-on and watching the math work in real-time genuinely helps connect what we learn in class with its practical application.”
