Celebrating the Yoms

After the establishment of the State of Israel, Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), Yom HaZikaron (Memorial Day), and Yom HaAtzmaut (Independence Day) were added to the Jewish calendar and observed as national holidays in Israel. At Weber, we honor these significant days with heartfelt ceremonies and activities that reflect their importance and impact.

Last week, the school came together to commemorate Yom HaShoah, a solemn day dedicated to honoring the memories of the six million Jewish men, women, and children who perished in the Holocaust. 

This past Monday, The Weber School community gathered to commemorate Yom HaZikaron and honor the memory of Israeli soldiers and victims of terror. The ceremony began with Hanan Ben Ari's "Layla Tov, Shawn," a song that poignantly expresses loss and remembrance. It included the lowering of the Israeli flag, a moment of silence, and the lighting of memorial candles by faculty members who served in the IDF. We paid special tribute to local heroes Captain Dekel Swissa and Staff Sergeant Rose Lubin. Consul General Anat Sultan-Dadon and a representative from the Sandy Springs City Council also shared messages of support for Israel and calls to save the hostages.

The next day, Weber’s Yom HaAtzmaut celebration began with Rabbi Adam Mayer reflecting on the transition from mourning to celebration, emphasizing the strength and pride in our identity. He highlighted Israel's achievements over the past 76 years and the importance of connecting with Jews worldwide while pursuing peace and justice. After his remarks, our beloved Shinshinim, Tal Hanin and Yuval Yaniv, shared their love for Israel and led our students in a friendly trivia competition with Israel-themed questions and fun prizes for the participants. The celebration concluded with an extended lunch and ice cream to close the festivities.
