Stories of Resilience

In the wake of the the attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7th, The Weber School has enhanced its ongoing relationship with Israel and Israelis by hosting guest speakers and teachers from Israel who share their personal experiences and insights during these particularly challenging times. During the past week, Weber was honored to welcome guests representing different elements of Israeli society:

ImpactIsrael and Yemin Orde Youth Village

Our community was recently enriched by the visit of representatives from ImpactIsrael and Yemin Orde Youth Village. These organizations are dedicated to supporting at-risk youth across Israel. Their visit was a powerful testament to the transformative work being done, empowering children from diverse backgrounds, including those affected by the recent conflict. It underscored the importance of Tikkun Olam and the pivotal role of education in fostering resilience and unity in the face of adversity.

Voices from Nahal Oz

The stories of Naomi Petel Adler and Mirjam Heutink deeply moved our students and faculty. Naomi and her family endured a harrowing siege in their shelter during the attack on Nahal Oz, yet her spirit of determination and commitment to her home remained unshaken. Similarly, Mirjam's journey from the Netherlands to Nahal Oz is a testament to the strength and resolve of those who choose to make Israel their home, even in the face of ongoing challenges.

Honoring Dekel Swissa z"l

In the coming days, we are honored to welcome the father and brother of Dekel Swissa z"l, a former shinshin stationed in Atlanta who tragically lost his life on October 7th while saving the lives of his fellow soldiers. Their visit will be an opportunity for our community to honor Dekel's memory, learn about his life legacy, and reflect on the values he embodied: courage, selflessness, and a deep love for Israel.

These visits have been a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the bond between The Weber School community and Israel, providing our students with a deeper understanding of the complexities of life in Israel and the importance of learning from our brothers and sisters who live there.
